Download or print one of these two free potty training charts to motivate and reward your child as he/she is learning to use the toilet.  Use small stickers or a crayon each time your child goes to the potty.  Engage your child by letting them place the sticker on the chart by themselves since all toddlers like to do everything "all by myself!"

Don't ask your toddler, "do you want to go potty" b/c toddlers love to say no to everything. Try just saying something like "it's time to use the potty", or give a choice like "do you want to use the hall bathroom or mommy's bathroom"

The best advice i got was to get a potty when baby was around 10 months and put her on it with no diaper every now and then... read books to keep them sitting there, and then clap and cheer if pee comes out - then they make the association of pee/poop w/ the potty and they get comfortable doing it...the person who gave me this advice had their baby potty trained by 1.5 years.

My daughter was highly motivated by wearing her princess underpants. One gloomy Saturday we put her in them and let her have an accident. She did not like the feeling of the wet underpants and the next time she had to pee, she went on the toilet. There were plenty more accidents the next day, but after that, she had no problem going on the toilet. M&M's also help as motivators! Pooping on the toilet took longer, but they just need to get over the anxiety of it, and she was trained quickly. She is 2 years, 9 months and completely trained except through the night.

Potty training can be tricky and potentially a huge headache. I found that I had to mentally prepare myself for about a week or two before I began potty training. You don't want your impatience, frustration, and anger to rub off on your child. I think it gives them a nervous vibe which makes it harder. It's important to know that there is no one right way, each child is different and try your best not to compare with other kid's potty training time table. I have two boys, now 5 & 3. I started training both of them at 2 years old. Understand that they peed and pooped anytime they wanted for the first 2 years of their life and now it's suddenly not okay. So it takes some time! Have lots of rewards available, whether it's stickers, treats or a big hug! Make a big deal about their successes and with their failures be firm, not mean. Buy the potty chair early on and have it around so they are used to it. And I bought this DVD online called "Potty Power" which they loved! It's a little funny but quite effective for kids, they still know the songs. I played it for them before I started potty training and while the potty training was going on. Good luck!
